Decorative masonry Milwaukie OR is the craft of building non-structural brick, stone and cast stone features that carry the look of a home: garden walls, fireplace surrounds, porch columns, veneer facades and patio borders. It is not load-bearing work, so the details that matter are pattern, joint consistency and material match. We lay every unit on a mason's line, cut with a wet saw or angle grinder, and tool the mortar joints by hand so the finished wall reads as one continuous surface instead of a patchwork.
Milwaukie homes sit in a wet, mild climate where freeze-thaw cycles are rare but constant moisture is not. That combination punishes bad mortar and thin veneer ties faster than most homeowners expect. If you are searching for decorative masonry near me Milwaukie OR, you likely have a wall that is spalling, a fireplace that needs a new face, or a plain concrete porch you want dressed up. We handle all three, and we do it with materials rated for the Pacific Northwest.
Every decorative masonry project we take on includes design consultation, material sourcing, site protection, the build itself, cleanup and a final walkthrough. Add-ons like lighting, drainage or structural reinforcement are priced separately and only if your project needs them.
We walk the space with you, take measurements, and talk through material and pattern options. You leave the visit knowing what is possible, what it costs and how long it takes. No charge, no obligation.
We order brick, stone, mortar and reinforcing steel from suppliers we trust, including Mutual Materials, Belgard and Techo-Bloc. Materials arrive on site before we start, so there are no mid-job delays waiting on a truck.
We tarp landscaping, protect walkways and set up dust control before cutting anything. Base excavation, compaction and layout follow, checked with a mason's level and line so the first course is dead true.
Our masons lay every unit by hand, cut with a wet saw or angle grinder, and tool joints with a jointing tool for a consistent profile. We build to ASTM masonry standards and check plumb and level as we go.
We sweep, haul debris and wash the finished surface. Then you walk the work with the lead mason, who explains the flashing, weep holes and joint profile. Care instructions and our warranty come with the handoff.
We meet you at the property, measure the space, and talk through material options: brick, natural stone veneer, cast stone or concrete block. This visit takes 45 to 60 minutes. You get a written scope and a fixed price before we schedule anything.
We bring samples from Mutual Materials, Belgard and Techo-Bloc so you can see color and texture in your own light. You pick the brick or stone, we confirm quantities, and we order with a 5 to 10 percent overage for cuts and breakage.
We protect landscaping, set up the mason's line, and establish the base. For walls and patios that means excavating 6 to 8 inches, compacting gravel, and checking slope with a mason's level so water runs away from the house.
Our masons lay the units, cut with a wet saw or angle grinder, and tool every joint by hand. A typical fireplace surround takes two to three days; a 40-foot garden wall runs four to six. We clean the wall and the site before we leave.
You walk the finished work with the lead mason. We point out the weep holes, the flashing and the joint profile, then hand over care instructions. Our workmanship is warrantied, and we come back if anything needs attention.
Purpose-built equipment, used by trained technicians — so the job is done accurately the first time.
Used to set the first course dead level and keep every course after it true. A wall that starts out of level never catches up, so this is the first thing we check.
For cutting brick, stone and block to fit. The wet saw handles straight cuts and reduces dust; the angle grinder gets into tight corners and shapes irregular stone.
The trowel spreads mortar, the jointing tool finishes the joint profile, and the mortar hoe mixes in the tub. Hand-tooled joints are what separate decorative masonry from a plain block wall.
For trimming brick and stone by hand where a saw would be too aggressive or too slow. Used constantly on restoration work where original units need to be saved.
Pre-bagged mortar mixes we use for most new construction. Consistent strength and color, and they are rated for the wet conditions we get in western Oregon.
Used behind veneer and inside block walls to tie the work to the structure and keep water out. Not visible when the job is done, but it is why the wall lasts.
A 1958 brick fireplace in Ardenwald had spalling faces on about 20 bricks, eroded mortar joints, and a previous repair done with portland cement that was trapping moisture and making things worse.
We removed the failed cement patch, replaced 20 bricks with matched salvaged units, and repointed the whole surround with lime mortar. The fireplace now reads as original, and the wall can dry properly. The job took three days.
A Hector Campbell backyard had a cracked 12-by-16-foot concrete slab, no shade, and no reason to spend time outside. The slab had settled about an inch on one corner and pooled water after every rain.
We removed the slab, excavated 9 inches, compacted gravel in lifts, and laid a natural stone patio with a low seat wall and a fire pit surround. The finished space is level, drains properly, and gets used from April through October.
A 1974 ranch in Concord had plain painted siding and a flat, dated front elevation. The owner wanted a custom look but did not want to rebuild the whole wall.
We installed natural stone veneer over a prepared substrate with new flashing and weep holes, capped it with a cast stone sill, and added a matching entry column. The project took nine days and completely changed the home's street presence.
Most decorative masonry calls we get in Milwaukie come down to water, age or a previous repair done with the wrong material. Here is what we see and how we handle it.
Ask a pro →We identify the water source first, then replace spalled units with matched brick and repoint with mortar that matches the original in strength and color. On older Milwaukie homes that usually means lime mortar, not portland cement. Most repairs finish in one to three days.
We clear weep holes, repair or add flashing, and apply a breathable sealer that lets the wall dry while keeping bulk water out. Efflorescence itself gets treated and removed. This is the cheapest way to extend the life of decorative masonry in Milwaukie.
We inspect the ties and substrate, remove the failed section, replace corroded ties with new reinforcing steel, and rebuild the veneer with correct flashing and weep holes. We document the repair so you have a record for insurance or resale.
We assess the cause, whether it is drainage, soil movement or a failed base. Then we rebuild the affected section on a properly compacted base with drainage gravel, and restore the finish so the repair blends in. Most residential walls in Milwaukie are 2 to 4 feet tall and can be corrected in under a week.
Most decorative masonry projects in Milwaukie run $1,800 to $12,000 in 2026, depending on size and material. A single fireplace surround typically lands between $2,500 and $5,000. A 40-foot brick garden wall runs $4,000 to $8,000. Stone veneer on a front facade starts around $9,000. We give you a fixed written price after the on-site walkthrough, so you are never guessing.
